What we can do for our all sustainability

“Sustainability is one of our core principles. We want our children and our children’s children to live in an intact environment, and we want to protect the soil to be able to grow food in the future as weil.”

Michael Lettenbichler (CEO)

WOOD CHIP POWER PLANT

Our Wood Chip Power Plant runs with waste wood and saves the consumption of 7,145 tons of C02 per year. lt is our non-fossil energy source and produces the hot air for our dryers. This project runs since 2022 and created a new workplace in our company. The plant is located next to our location in Luechow and is the most long-term project since now.

FIELD ROBOTS

Our Field Robots are the “Farm Droid” and the “Field Mate”. Both are powered by sun.
The Farm Droid is a C02 neutral robot which can sow and do the weed control. With its GPS technology it saves the spots where the seed was set and can remove the weed around it.
The Field Mate is a local weather station, it measures the temperature, air humidity, soil temperature and does a weather forecast. All those datas can be checked on the cellphone. By these facts it helps reducing the amount of pesticides and water.

SOLAR PANELS & AGROPHOTOVOLTAIK

On all our plants we build solar panels to support the nature and reduce the consumption of C02 . All those energy sources make us almost independent of availability, so we can produce even in worst cases.

On one of our fields we build one of the biggest agrophotovoltaic plants in Germany. lt covers one hectare and with its 6 m height all machines can easily pass underneath.
Per year we gain 1.2 MW.

BIODIVERSITY PLAN

We support nature by planting over 6,000 trees and bushes, building and placing birdhouses, supporting local beekeeper and managing a flower strip project. In addition we created an orchard meadow next to our plant. lt is a habitat for many animals and provides food for bees and bumblebees.

IRRIGATION SYSTEM

We use Drip Irrigation and the Rain Dancer, which is a system to communicate with the pump via cellphone. It can reduce water and energy consumption. Since you have the monitoring on your cellphone it avoids many failures. The Drip Irrigation System supports the avoidance of promoting fungal diseases and also reduce the water consumption.

SHORT WAYS – LESS FUEL

Short transport routes are a central component of our strategy. 80 % of the cultivation areas are located within a maximum radius of 50 kilometers from our drying plant. This proximity enables us to process the products quickly and freshly, which preserves their quality.

By reducing transportation distances, we not only reduce fuel consumption, but also CO2 emissions, which makes a direct contribution to environmental protection. At the same time, we strengthen local agriculture and promote regional value creation. Our approach is a clear step towards sustainability and shows that efficient production and environmental protection can go hand in hand.

Certification

For us, our farmers are more than just product suppliers – we work closely hand in hand to create the perfect products

Our growing and supplying farmers are located within a close radius of our locations so that the fresh produce has a short route to processing.

Wood Chip Power Plant

Sustainable energy plays a central role in our production of air-dried herbs and vegetables. We rely on renewable energy from biomass to operate our drying plants in an efficient and environmentally friendly manner. A biomass cogeneration plant converts wood into heat and electricity, supplying our plants with the energy they need.

The process begins with the delivery of logs, which are processed on the site. These logs are shredded in powerful machines, resulting in wood chips that are optimized for combustion. After shredding, the woodchips are stored in a warehouse until they are needed for energy production. They remain dry and safely stored there to ensure efficient use. As soon as demand increases, the wood chips are transported to the biomass cogeneration plant.

The wood chips are burned in the biomass cogeneration plant, generating heat and electricity. This form of energy generation makes efficient use of natural resources and reduces dependence on fossil fuels

Field Robots

In our company, we rely on modern technology to make the cultivation of our herbs and vegetables sustainable and efficient. Two important helpers in this process are the FarmDroid and the FieldMate, which support us in optimizing our agricultural processes and protecting the environment at the same time.

The FarmDroid is a self-propelled robot that applies seeds precisely and also hoes and weeds fields autonomously. With an impressive GPS accuracy of up to 2 cm, the robot works very precisely and efficiently. By using it, we can significantly reduce energy and diesel consumption and thus actively contribute to more sustainable agriculture. We currently use two FarmDroids to help us maintain our fields on a daily basis.

The FieldMate is another important component of our technology. This robot is responsible for recording, documenting and forecasting weather data across our cultivation areas. The data collected is used by our cultivation advisor to precisely plan plant cultivation measures such as irrigation and the right time for harvesting. The FieldMates can also calculate disease models that help us to react early to potential problems such as pests or diseases.

By using these two robots, we can not only optimize yields, but also conserve resources and reduce emissions, leading to more environmentally friendly and sustainable farming. The combination of precise technology and sustainable farming methods ensures that we improve the quality of our products while minimizing our environmental impact.

Solar Panels

We installed photovoltaic systems on the roofs of our buildings to produce renewable energy directly on site.

The solar energy generated powers our production processes and offices, which improves our carbon footprint and reduces operating costs. Through this investment, we are reducing our dependence on fossil fuels and making a contribution to climate protection.

With photovoltaics, we are taking an important step towards a more sustainable future and at the same time strengthening the quality and environmental friendliness of our products.

Agrophotovoltaic

As a company for air-dried herbs and vegetables, we rely on sustainable cultivation methods – and agrophotovoltaics play a key role in this. In Seerau in the Lucie, our chives grow under Germany’s largest and most modern agrophotovoltaic system, which was built as a pilot project.

Over an area of one hectare, solar modules six meters high generate environmentally friendly electricity, while high-quality herbs thrive underneath. Thanks to a drive-through width of twelve meters, agricultural cultivation remains efficient and flexible.

This innovative combination brings double benefits: While we grow and harvest top-quality aromatic herbs, sustainable energy is produced at the same time. In this way, together with agriculture, we make a contribution to conserving resources and protecting the climate.

Biodiversity Plan

As part of our commitment to sustainability and environmental protection, we at Steinicke are implementing several important projects that promote biodiversity and make agriculture fit for the future. In addition to planting our orchard meadow and supporting the beekeepers’ association to reintroduce the dark bee in Wendland, we have also launched numerous other initiatives that contribute to the positive development of nature.

For example, we have created flower strips that not only provide a valuable food supply for insects, but also support biodiversity in our region. We have also built birdhouses that provide shelter and breeding opportunities for native birds. We are particularly proud to have already planted over 6,000 trees and bushes to enrich the surrounding area with additional greenery and expand the habitats for numerous animals.

Our projects to promote biodiversity and sustainability are an integral part of our corporate approach. As a company that has been producing air-dried herbs and vegetables for over 100 years, we are aware of our responsibility towards nature and the environment. We see it as our duty to actively contribute to the protection of natural resources and to support the region in the long term. With every planting, every flower strip and every measure we implement, we not only want to make agriculture more sustainable, but also set an example of respectful treatment of our environment.

Irrigation System

We rely on innovative irrigation solutions to ensure quality and sustainability. With the Rain Dancer, a modern drip irrigation system, we optimize the water supply to our plants and save valuable resources.

The Rain Dancer ensures uniform irrigation by precisely delivering water directly to the roots. This not only minimizes water consumption, but also reduces the risk of disease as the foliage remains dry. This is particularly beneficial for growing herbs and vegetables that are sensitive to waterlogging.

Thanks to the efficient use of water and energy, we can ensure a consistently high quality of our air-dried products and improve our environmental footprint at the same time. The Rain Dancer helps us to work in a way that conserves resources and is sustainable.
